Greater Accra wins 2017 National Sports Festival

The Greater Accra Regional Sports Development Council emerged winners in the rejuvenated National Sports Festival held in Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.

They were followed by Central Region while the host region finished third at the end of the weeklong activities.

Outstanding athletes were presented with certificates of participation while regional winners in each discipline were also presented with a customised trophy.

According to the National Sports Authority (NSA), the 2018 edition of the competition would be hosted in the Central Region at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

In the breakdown of activities, Ashanti Region finished first in athletics followed by Greater Accra with Western finishing third for both male and female category.

Greater Accra defeated Western Region in boxing to finish first while Eastern Region came third. Greater Accra again dominated in both male and female handball with Eastern Region and Volta Region finishing second and third respectively in the men’s handball while Central and Volta also came second and third in the women’s category.

In taekwondo men, Greater Accra, Ashanti and Volta were the top three regions while Greater Accra, Western and Central also came tops in the women category.

Central Region won the women’s tennis followed by Greater Accra and Ashanti while Eastern won the men’s division followed by Greater Accra and Central Regions.

Greater Accra again won the women’s volleyball competition followed by Northern Region and Western while Greater Accra again won the men’s division followed by Eastern and Upper East Region.

In women soccer, Northern Region came first followed by Greater Accra and Western Region. Ashanti Region, Upper East and Eastern Regions were the top three in badminton men while Upper East, Ashanti and Greater Accra were the tops in badminton women.

Eastern Region was first in men’s table tennis followed by Ashanti and Central while Central, Eastern and Greater Accra were the top three in the women division.

Western Region also finished first in netball followed by Central Region and Greater Accra Region in second and third respectively.

In para-sports, Brong Ahafo Region won the wheelchair basketball followed by Greater Accra and Ashanti while Northern Region won women athletics followed by Greater Accra and Ashanti while Greater Accra won that of the men with Northern and Ashanti following suit.

The national event brought together over 1000 athletes across the 10 regions in the various disciplines to compete for laurels and also for the technical committee of the NSA to scout for budding talents for the various national teams.
