The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has called for a weekly or bi-monthly government debriefings to update the public on progress in the fight against illegal mining activities popularly called ‘galamsey’.
“We need a weekly or bi-monthly debriefing by the government on progress in weeding these criminals off our forests and rivers, and prosecution progress,” Asare stated in a Facebook comment.
His call reflects growing public concern over the environmental destruction caused by galamsey and the perceived lack of accountability in addressing the issue.
Despite government interventions, including military-led operations and regulatory measures, many believe stronger actions and more consistent updates from the government are needed.
Meanwhile, some stakeholders have suggested that President Mahama declares a state of emergency in heavily affected areas to intensify the fight against the menace.
