The Minister of Energy, John Jinapor, has confirmed that the government will initiate a criminal investigation into the disappearance of over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Speaking on JoyNews’ News Night on March 25, he emphasized the need for a forensic probe to uncover how the containers were removed from the port and where they ended up.
Jinapor explained that upon taking office, he learned that ECG had over 2,500 containers stuck at the port, with a demurrage fee of about 1.5 billion cedis.
After a physical count, it was revealed that more than 1,300 containers were unaccounted for. As a result, the government will launch an investigation to determine how the containers were taken out of the port and identify the responsible parties.
The investigation will scrutinize the roles of national security, the ports, clearing companies, and ECG.
Additionally, the investigative report chaired by Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah uncovered concerns over procurement irregularities, as one of the contracted firms did not have the necessary license for the job.
