Gov’t spent $15m on feeding of athletes during13th African Games

Kobena Mensah Woyome, Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee for Youth, Sports, and Tourism, has raised concerns about the government’s expenditure during the hosting of the African Games in Accra.

In an interview with Joy Sports, the Member of Parliament for South Tongu alleged that the government of Ghana spent $15 million on feeding athletes during the Games.

He said “You are spending $245 million, and out of that, we got to know that a whopping amount of $15 million was used to feed athletes for 18 days.”

Mr. Woyome further insisted that some revelations about the expenditure on the Games that are coming to light are damning and need to be investigated.

”You realize that some of these things need to be investigated,” he called for a nonpartisan inquiry into the expenditure of the Games.

The 13th Africa Games were held from March 8 to 23, 2024. A total of 2,644 athletes participated in the 18-day event. Despite numerous revelations about the costs involved, an accountability document is yet to be issued by the Sports Ministry and the Local Organizing Committee.
