The government is in advanced negotiations with a strategic investor to revamp and potentially take over AirtelTigo, now rebranded as AT. This move aims to reposition the state-owned telecom operator and boost competition in the telecommunications sector.

Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, revealed the development during a stakeholder engagement with telecom CEOs on Friday, May 30, 2025.

According to him, the parties have set a 60-day deadline to conclude the deal. The goal is to launch improved services by the end of the third quarter of 2025.

“Maybe for the first time, I will put out that the government is currently in negotiations with a strategic partner to revamp and take over AT. We’ve given ourselves 60 days to wrap up discussions and hopefully roll out improved services by Q3,” Sam George said.

The move is part of a broader effort to inject capital and technical expertise into AT, which has struggled to compete since the government assumed control in 2021.

In addition, the Minister announced that Cabinet has approved the release of new spectrum resources to major players, including Telecel and MTN. This decision is expected to boost infrastructure and enhance service delivery.

“Cabinet is giving approval for spectrum to be offered to Telecel and MTN. The regulators also highlighted the need for connecting entity licenses so that AT and Telecel can tap into NGIC platform resources. MTN is welcome to participate as well,” he added.

These developments reflect a renewed government push to modernize Ghana’s telecom sector and enhance consumer experience through innovation and competition.
