In a surprising turn of events, Minister for Health, Kwabena Minitah Akando, has denied reports that the Mahama-led government has revoked the appointments of newly recruited nurses.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mintah Akando clarified that the Health Service or any agency under the Health Ministry has not revoked anybody’s appointment.
He emphasized that any health professional who has undergone the right processes, obtained financial clearance, and been posted will not be sacked.
This assurance comes after the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) threatened industrial action if the directive to revoke appointments of nurses and midwives recruited after December 7, 2024, was not rescinded.
The GRNMA argued that the recruitment process for nurses and midwives is rigorous and involves financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance, followed by a mandatory one-year internship.
The association contended that nurses and midwives recruited after December 7, 2024, are professionals who have undergone the necessary training and deserve to practice their skills.
Cholera
Mintah Akando also addressed concerns about the cholera outbreak, stating that cases were first recorded in October 2024, when DCEs and MCEs were still at post.
He urged against politicizing the disease, emphasizing that cholera is primarily a sanitation and water problem.
Additionally, he clarified that the government has a threshold for requesting vaccinations, and although Effutu Constituency has recorded cases, the application for vaccination will be made once the threshold is met.
He assured that a consignment for Effutu Constituency in the Central Region would be received by the end of next week.
