James Agalga, Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, has vehemently addressed the concerns raised by the Minority regarding updates on the Sapeiman gold and cash raid, a high-profile operation that culminated in the seizure of 12 containers of gold and cash at Sapeiman, Accra, nearly two months ago.

The Minority had demanded accountability and transparency regarding the raid, as well as a separate case involving a suspected cocaine and cash shipment linked to two suspicious flights that landed at Kotoka International Airport in March 2025.

Agalga explained that while the committee had invited the Ministers for Defence and Interior to provide updates on similar security-related matters, the Minority had not formally requested a briefing on the Sapeiman case.

He noted that certain details of the investigation cannot be disclosed prematurely, as doing so could jeopardize ongoing inquiries and security operations.

“The last time the committee took a decision to invite the Ministers for Defence and Interior to appear, they appeared and briefed us on certain matters,” Agalga stated.

He added, “The Minority should have used the same opportunities and privileges to request a briefing on the Sapeiman case.”

Agalga further emphasized that the Minority’s failure to request a briefing suggests that they understood the importance of allowing National Security to continue their work without interference.

He assured that the ministers will provide a detailed account of their actions regarding the interceptions at an appropriate time.

“They are in pursuit of some other individuals who are on the run; those in their custody are giving them useful clues,” Agalga explained.

“We won’t disclose details prematurely, as it could compromise the investigation. At an appropriate time, the ministers will give us a detailed account of whatever they have done in respect of the interceptions,” he stressed.

The Sapeiman gold raid has highlighted the need for greater transparency and accountability in this current government.

The operation, which resulted in the seizure of 12 containers of gold and cash, has raised concerns about the potential for corruption and abuse of power.
