The government has petitioned the National Media Commission (NMC) demanding an apology and retraction from Multimedia Group for linking it to the activities of an alleged vigilante group.

According to a letter autographed by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister for Information, the government further demanded a punitive punishment meted out to Multimedia for falsifying the documentary it showed on its outlet Joy News TV.

A couple of weeks ago, Joy News TV showed a documentary of an alleged political vigilante group associated to the Nana Addo, the President, and his New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In the documentary, some youth attired in black and white were at a parade at the Christianborg Castle, Osu, which houses some of the ministries.

A statement by the leader of the group, De Eye, suggested that President Akufo-Addo supported their activities.

Since the documentary was telecast, both government and NPP communicators had denied any association with the De Eye, and described the expose as cheap propaganda and irresponsible.

Despite conflicting defences by the government and party communicators not to betray the group, whose leader, in the documentary, said its activities are not geared at overthrowing President Akufo-Addo or Kan Dapaah, Minister for National Security, the opposition political parties and some civil society organisations had lashed at the government for clandestinely training thugs to destabilise the peace of the country.

The release of the damaging documentary was only a few days after President Akufo-Addo had tasked the leadership of the NPP and NDC to meet to discuss ways of disbanding political thugs.

Many a Ghanaian said the timely documentary had exposed the hypocrisy of the government.
