In order to continue discrediting and ‘killing’ any infrastructural projects carried out by the John Mahama-led government, Nana Addo’s government has abandoned the Saglemi Affordable Housing project his predecessor started.
The about 1,400 completed first phase housing units, conspicuous flats along the Tema-Aflao highway in the Ningo-Prampram District, were completed in 2016, but according to the Minister for Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, his ministry intends to abrogate the existing contract following what he described as poor value for money analysis of the project.
He accused the former government of allegedly short-changing the state “and the ministry has referred the matter to the Attorney General for advice.”
Over 1,500 permanent workers at the site had since been laid off, according to the Procurement Manager at the site, Sylvanus Attivor.
He said the entire project was stalled in 2017 due to the government’s decision to review the contract surrounding it.
He said the job losses started before the end of 2017, and though he pleaded with the government to give the green light for workers to be recalled to resume work to proceed with the second phase of the housing project, Samuel Atta Akyea was emphatic that the contract with the current contractor would be terminated.
“The case is with the Attorney General and should any malfeasance be identified, we will deal with all persons involved according to the law,” he said.
