The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has refuted claims that the government plans to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

During a briefing with the presidential press corps on March 7, following President John Dramani Mahama’s second cabinet meeting, Jinapor clarified that the government is not considering privatizing these state-owned entities.

Instead, the government is exploring a potential partnership aimed at improving revenue collection within the sector, which has been a persistent challenge.

Jinapor emphasized that the goal is to enhance the efficiency of these power distributors while ensuring their financial sustainability, all without compromising state ownership.

He assured the public that both ECG and NEDCo will remain public assets and any changes would be made with the national interest in mind, aiming to improve their overall efficiency rather than privatize them.
