The Ghana Gold Board has announced that all licenses issued to individuals or entities, excluding large-scale mining companies, to deal in gold have ceased to be valid following the passage of the Ghana Gold Board Act (ACT 1140), 2025.
As a result, the Gold Board is now the sole buyer, seller, assayer, and exporter of all gold produced by the licensed Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) sector.
According to the statement issued on April 14, 2025, no person or entity is permitted to export ASM gold from Ghana or purchase/deal in gold in the country without a license from the Ghana Gold Board.
However, to ensure a smooth transition and respect existing contractual obligations, the Gold Board has allowed licensed gold buyers and exporters to continue operations until April 30, 2025.
During this period, licensed buyers must purchase gold in Ghana cedis at prices calculated based on the Bank of Ghana Reference Rate.
Ghanaians whose licenses have ceased to be valid or those interested in dealing in gold are encouraged to apply for a license under the Ghana Gold Board Act, effective April 22, 2025. Applications can be submitted online via the Gold Board’s website or physically at their head office in Accra.
As of May 1, 2025, it will be a punishable offense to purchase or deal in gold without a license issued by the Ghana Gold Board
