The minority in the Parliament is demanding a thorough explanation from the government regarding the massive gold and cash seizures made by National Security in February.
The operation, which uncovered 12 containers filled with gold bars and a substantial amount of cash in US dollars and Ghanaian cedis, has been shrouded in mystery, with the public left in the dark about the details.
According to Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, the operation took place in a southern municipality of Accra, but nearly two months have passed without any updates from National Security
“This operation has attracted significant media attention. The public has a right to know how much was seized and the full scope of the operation,” Rev. Fordjour noted.
The Minority is concerned about the lack of transparency and accountability surrounding the operation, particularly since the identities of those responsible for the large-scale shipment of gold and cash remain unknown.
“It is unacceptable that, after all this time, we still don’t know the exact quantity of gold or the specific amount of cash seized,” Rev. Fordjour emphasized.
Furthermore, the government has not clarified its intentions for the seized assets, which are still under National Security’s custody.
“We demand accountability; National Security must provide a clear explanation of the gold bars and cash seized, as well as their intentions for these assets,” Rev. Fordjour insisted.
The Minority has given National Security a two-month deadline to update the public on the progress of the investigation. With no information forthcoming, skepticism is growing, and the Minority has vowed to keep pushing for transparency and accountability.
“We assure the public that the mighty minority will not rest until a full and transparent account of the situation is provided by the Minister for the Interior,” Rev. Fordjour stated.
