The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has confirmed that 50,458 teachers who passed the 2024 aptitude test for promotion have now been officially placed on their correct grades as of April 2025.
In a statement signed by GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Musah, the union highlighted that this significant achievement followed successful discussions between GNAT and the Ghana Education Service (GES) during a meeting on April 25, 2025.
The statement revealed that out of the 54,227 teachers who successfully passed the 2024 aptitude test, 50,458 have had their placements finalized. It was also noted that the remaining cases, including a backlog from the 2023 batch, will be addressed by May 2025.
Additionally, GNAT reported progress in the issue of teachers previously removed from the payroll. Of the 1,579 teachers affected, 1,417 have had their salaries reinstated, leaving only 162 cases yet to be resolved.
The union also provided updates on promotions for teachers in lower ranks, stating that all 16 regions had submitted necessary data to GES and that placements would be completed by May 2025.
On the issue of teachers returning from further studies, GNAT acknowledged that many had not been upgraded since 2023. However, an agreement has been reached to ensure all such teachers are upgraded by the end of May 2025. The GES Director-General has committed to issuing directives to Regional Directors to expedite this process.
Furthermore, GNAT has scheduled a stakeholders meeting for May 2025 to fix dates for the next aptitude test. The union also expressed its gratitude to President John Mahama for approving a 20 percent allowance for teachers working in deprived areas, recognizing it as a morale booster for those serving under challenging conditions.
GNAT concluded by assuring its members that unresolved issues related to the Collective Agreement for GES staff, including salary disparities on the Single Spine Pay Structure, will be addressed in the coming month.
