The Ghana card is another brilliant initiative by the John Mills/John Mahama administration. It is a very laudable initiative which was started but later came to a halt due to some administrative challenges.
Though this current government tried to take credit for the project, the company given the contract exposed Dr Bawumia and Prof. Ken Ataafuah by tracing the birth of the project to the NDC administration.
The project which was to cost $155million has today jumped to $1.2billion. A topic to be subjected to scrutiny on another day.
[ads1]However, some aspect(s) of the registration format must be reviewed IMMEDIATELY to prevent legal tussle and infringement on the rights of the good people of Ghana.
My mum and dad are Ghanaians and have voted since 1992 but have no BIRTH CERTIFICATE(S) and Travelling passports. Per the current structure of the NIA it means automatically they are not qualified for the GHANACARD.
How many people in my villages Alavanyo Kpeme in the Volta Region and Berekum in B/A have birth certificates?
How many people in Kyebi, the President’s hometown have those items required by the NIA as the prove of citizenship?
Documentation remains the greatest challenge in this country and one day can’t be used to solve it.
If I am not mistaken, more than half of the people in this country reside in the villages and have no birth certificate.
Ghana goes beyond Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast etc.
Previously, the primary documents demanded by the NIA for issuance of the GHANACARD were:Voters ID, birth certificate, baptismal card, driving license, travelling Passport were the documents required for the GHANACARD. Among all these one will easily lay hands on one of the above documents which brought lots of flexibility into the process.
But we were shocked to hear the NIA demanding for Birth certificate and Passport as the ONLY primary document for the registration.
Could it be that the NPP is playing the elite agenda to win 2020 since they know most of the NDC votes comes from the rural areas hence a plan to disenfranchise them? Because from a reliable source the Ghana card may be the only document one can use to prove his/her citizenship in Ghana.
I think the scope of documents required needs to be widened so that if Nana Addo and Nyantakyi use their travelling passport as a primary document required the oldman in Sandema can also get access to the GHANACARD with his voters ID.
The court must hear this and I need a lawyer ASAP before all my family members are disenfranchised.
