Civil Right Activist, Emmanuel Korsi Senyo has this time directed his anger at the Ghana Bar Association describing it as “one of most useless associations any professional should belong to”.
According to him “all the leadership of the Bar Association knows is collecting dues from its members and careless about the welfare of its [ads1]members”
For him, “The association in my village that my grandmother belongs to which donated almost 8,000GHC towards the burial service of the old woman is infact 99% better and more useful than the Bar Association.”
Mr. Senyo’s outburst is following Lawyer Sam Okudzeto’s postion on the quashing of the 3years suspension handed over to Lawyer Francis-Xavier Sosu last year by the GLC where Mr. Okudzeto is of the view that the High Court Judge, Justice Gifty Agyei-Appiah has no such powers to quash the decision of the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council who are made of Supreme Court judges.
But Mr. Senyo asked, “what is Sam Okudzeto talking about, that because Supreme Court Judges come to sit on the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council then it makes that GLC’s Committee an Court of Appeal and that is only the Supreme Court can quash the Committee’s decision?”
“It looks like the General Legal Council’s stands as the rulers of Ghana and decides how the laws of Ghana must apply and to whom it must be applied will not end any time soon considering the continuous posture of a member of their Disciplinary Committee, Senior Lawyer Sam Okudzeto”
If we can recall, in June last year the General Legal Council has barred renowned Human Rights Lawyer, Francis-Xavier Sosu from practicing as a lawyer for three years over allegations of touting and personal advertisement; and overcharging a client.
On Wednesday, the Human Rights Court presided over by Justice Gifty Agyei-Addo has set-aside the orders of the General Legal Council suspending private legal practitioner Francis-Xavier Sosu.
The court also set-aside the one-year mentorship imposed by the GLC on Mr Sosu, renowned for his human rights advocacy.
Since the suspension of Lawyer Sosu, Korsi Senyo has been at the forefront fighting the General Legal Council at the Supreme Court. He has since filed four writs at the Supreme Court challenging among other things the composition of the council, its decision to amend the law that prohibits lawyers from advertising without recourse to parliament.
He is therefore calling for the total repeal of the ACT 1960 that established the GLC.
“We have a problem in Ghana. Infact, Ghana is sick. How can we allow the General Legal Council to be acting the way they are doing based on that outmoded 1960 law that established it. Why can’t that law be totally repealed, reviewed or amended?”
