The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) has begun the introduction of the sport of armwrestling to the various tertiary institutions across the country.

First to benefit was the University of Ghana as the game was held as part of activities marking the launch of this semester’s inter hall games.

Officials and executives of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation stormed the Legon campus to demonstrate to the students how the sport that uses strength, speed and power is played.

The fun-filled activity was commenced with a demonstration exercise by athletes from the national team after which some students were invited to showcase what they learnt from the professionals.

President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, Charles Osei Assibey expressed his delight with the reception and patronage of the sport and also used the opportunity to announce their partnership with Twillieum Company that will see them embark on a nationwide tour to unearth armwrestling talents.

“I’m pleased with how the students have welcomed the sport. Our presence here today is aimed at introducing the sport to the school because we believe that the school affords us an opportunity to spot talents and groom them for the future.

“Armwrestling is undoubtedly the second biggest sporting discipline in the country and we thought it wise to go the various universities and scout for talents.

“We are doing a tour of the tertiary institutions in the country. Our next stop from here is the University of Cape Coast.

“I want to use this opportunity to announce that we have agreed a deal with Twillieum company, producers of Rush Energy drink that will see us visit communities to teach them armwrestling and discover new talents for the upcoming Africa Armwrestling Championship”, Charles said.

Established less than a year ago, Armwrestling has made remarkable strides winning 22 medals at the Africa Armwrestling Championship held Nigeria.
