Kwesi Pratt has raised serious concerns about the destructive impact of illegal mining, or galamsey, on Ghana’s environment and economy, describing its effects as catastrophic.
In a discussion on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Pratt expressed frustration over the widespread damage caused by illegal mining, linking it to the sharp decline in cocoa production and rising public health issues.
He pointed out that some blame galamsey for a staggering 60% drop in cocoa production, emphasizing the severe toll it has taken on the country’s agricultural sector.
Beyond agriculture, Pratt highlighted disturbing medical reports that show the harmful effects of pollution caused by illegal mining, including birth defects such as children being born without limbs or blind.
Pratt also criticized the previous government for its handling of the issue, stating that the devastation left in the wake of galamsey has left communities without access to clean water.
He specifically mentioned the Western Region, where many water plants have had to shut down due to contamination, leaving water authorities unable to provide safe drinking water to the population.
