Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has emphasized that the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, should be viewed as a perpetual, long-term endeavor rather than a fleeting campaign with fixed deadlines.

In a recent interview on Face to Face on Channel One TV, Kwakye Ofosu argued that expecting a complete eradication of illegal mining activities is unrealistic, as some individuals will always attempt to exploit natural resources unlawfully.

“I’m not convinced that setting a timeline is the right approach,” Kwakye Ofosu stated. “This should be a lifelong activity, where the state is always ready to act decisively and consistently whenever illegal mining rears its head.”

He stressed that the public demands visible action, not empty promises, and that what matters most is a demonstrable commitment to fighting galamsey.

Kwakye Ofosu underscored the importance of sustained vigilance and accountability, highlighting that the state’s duty is to stop illegal mining activities whenever they occur.

“What people want to see is a government that takes tangible action against galamsey, rather than making grand promises with arbitrary deadlines,” he added. “If someone is engaged in galamsey today, the government should be able to stop them and take action – that’s what the public expects.”

The government’s efforts to combat galamsey have been under intense scrutiny, with many calling for measurable results.

Kwakye Ofosu’s comments come amid growing concerns about the devastating impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves. Factually, as the fight against galamsey continues, Kwakye Ofosu’s words serve as a reminder of the need for a sustained and collective effort to protect country’s natural resources.
