Honorable Mark Owen Woyongo, a former Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central Constituency and Interior Minister in the John Mahama administration has passed away.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the general public – especially those in the Northern Region, are in deep sorrow.
The announcement of his passing was made yesterday by the Navorongo Central branch of the NDC.
“It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Hon. Mark Owen Woyongo, the former Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central. Hon. Woyongo, a dedicated and esteemed member of the NDC, left us in the late hours of yesterday 17, January 2024,” the statement said.
Mark Woyongo was a renowned politician and dedicated member of the NDC. His demise has left the country very saddened. Woyongo displayed public service by taking on problems, advocating for constituents’ interests, and striving for change. His legacy of dedication, passion, and commitment to advancement will continue to inspire the Navrongo community.
The late Honorable Mark Woyongo was born on June 9, 1946, in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region of Ghana. Before entering mainstream politics, he worked as the Upper East Regional Administration’s Public Relations Officer between 1978 and 1985.
In 1985, he was named Regional Information Officer for the Upper East Region, and in 1994, he became Minister Counselor for Information at the Ghana High Commission in London, United Kingdom. He later served as Minister for the Upper East Region from 2009 to 2012 under the late Professor John Atta Mills’ administration.
He won the 2012 congressional elections on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket, and in 2013, he was appointed Defence Minister and later Minister of the Interior under former President John Dramani Mahama.
The NDC leadership in the Navrongo Central Constituency has extended their heartfelt condolences to the late Honorable Mark Owen Woyongo’s family and the entire Navrongo branch of the National Democratic Congress, requesting prayers and respect for the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
Furthermore, the leadership of the National Democratic Congress in the Navrongo Central Constituency indicated that details about the late Mark Owen Woyongo’s funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
