A heated dispute has occurred between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) over the auctioning of containers housing electricity meters.

At the heart of the controversy is former ECG Managing Director, Samuel Dubik Mahama, who has been fighting to halt the auctioning process.

According to documents obtained, the ECG had contracted L & R Investment and Trading Company Limited to supply electricity meters, which were shipped between July 2017 and December 2018.

However, due to contractual disputes between ECG and the supplier, the goods remained at the port.

“We write to lodge a formal complaint to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) on the purported sale by auction of some containers at the port of Tema which have been found to contain electricity meters consigned to Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) by L & R Investment and Trading Company Limited,” Samuel Mahama wrote to the Director-General of the GPHA.

Samuel Mahama expressed concerns that the auction was conducted without notice to the ECG as the consignee on record or the supplier.

“Our further checks to confirm the gazette notification for the public auction of the containers did not produce any such public notice,” he added.

The ECG reportedly identified five containers that were allegedly auctioned, with numbers FSCU6768269, FSCU6339412, FSCU6810271, FSCU6993275, and FSCU6625289. The company believes that more containers may have been auctioned.

In a separate letter, Samuel Mahama requested the GRA to investigate the circumstances leading to the auctioning of the containers and to annul the auction as void.
