The Columbus community was excited when the National Premier Soccer League(NPSL) announced that FC Colombia was joining the season. The news was exhilarating considering it was just a new club. A Look at the Team
Their first competition match began in May in the Grandview Heights suburbs. FC Colombus began by competing in the Midwest Regions Great Lakes Conference. During the clubs forts matches the fans nicknamed them “the Saints” after the link between youth club TVSA Santos FC and FC Colombus.
The NPSL entered new territory this year after the relocation of Colombia Crew SC. FC Colombia is locally owned by and was started by Coach MaziyaChete in 1995. It was first known as Santos Futbol Club which was an all U 17 girls team.
Currently, the club has grown with over 300 members. Most of the members are the one whose college careers are over. Some have gone ahead to play in Spain and Sweden.
Chete began coaching way back in 1992. The team began as a professional youth program and it would take 20 years for that team to grow into a full-time club. Despite this Chetehas larger aspirations for his team which go even beyond the NPSL. He hopes to coach his team so that they can go ahead and qualify for the US Open Cup and the FIFA World Cup.
However, Chete does appreciate the benefit of joining NPSL. His team will get a chance to grow especially the MLS original SC Crew. The more the players get to play the more they get exposed to professional soccer.
Chete has also invested a lot in player development. He would like to raise his player’s standards to those that would make FC Columbus alumni in MLS, US Men’s National Team, FC Barcelona or Real Madrid. It is to be seen how the investments will seem to pay off in the near future.
This is an opportunity which has been handed to them to start making steps towards achieving all these. The Ohio Soccer Fans are very glad that the FC Columbus has been given a bigger opportunity.
During their first matches, FC Columbus went on to be FC Dominican 3-0. They continued their winning streak when they went on to beat Great Lakes Conference and Cleveland SC. They only went on to lose in April at Grandview but it was only by one goal.

The NPSL is the largest soccer league which is sanctioned by the US. It was founded in 2003 and qualifies for the US Open Cup.
In 2017 the league had 96 teams in 2017. However, the league is considered to be in the fourth tier in the United States Soccer Pyramid.
