A former United Nations Governance Advisor has joined the discussion surrounding Dr. George Akuffo Dampare’s dismissal as Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The removal of Dr. Dampare has generated conflicting responses, with some law enforcement officials and members of the public publicly applauding the change.
Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah, who was speaking on Joy FM’s Newsfile, said he disagrees with those who are blaming President John Dramani Mahama for removing Dr. Dampare. According to him, Mr. Mahama has done nothing wrong by changing the leadership of the police administration.
Prof. Agyeman-Duah remarked that the President’s decision to replace Dr. Dampre with Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohonu is a positive move.
He went on to say that if the President so desires, even the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) might be replaced.
“I find nothing wrong with the president changing the police IGP, and even the CDS if he decides to do so—it happens,” he said while discussing the dismissal of Dr Dampare.
He noted that for any president to have a successful administration, he will want to surround himself with top security officials who share and understand his vision.
“Any president coming into power will naturally want top officers who align with his vision of leadership. You cannot dispute that. Look at what has happened in the US and other countries,” he said.
