In a little over a month from now, Ghanaians will have the opportunity to decide on whether or not, our local government leaders be elected on partisan lines. Proponents of the idea believe, that election of these officials will narrow the accountability gap while stimulating active citizenship.
However, when all is said and done, the crucial matter of innovative revenue generation schemes, efficient expenditure management and general accountability need discussing.
It is in furtherance of the above objective, that IMANI Centre for Policy & Education (IMANI) is launching a report of a project on spending efficiency of local government agencies in Ghana. IMANI assessed the expenditure patterns, efficiencies and accountability mechanisms of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, with a view to providing insights into how we can leverage participatory budgeting tools to improve efficiency and accountability.
