Fifi Fiavi Kwettey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has denied making tribalistic remarks during a recent NDC retreat in the Volta Region.

He noted that the import of his message has been deliberately misinterpreted by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a bid to damage his reputation and sway public opinion ahead of the 2024 elections.

“The NPP’s allegations lack truth and are calculated efforts to exploit political circumstances. These accusations not only lack merit but are a deliberate attempt to tarnish my reputation and manipulate public perception,” he said in the statement.

Fifi Kwetey is reported to have said that everyone from the Volta Region must view the NDC as religion and that it wouldn’t be sensible for a Voltarian not to vote for the NDC.

However, the former MP for Ketu South in a press today, 19th January 2024, said the NPP’s frantic attempt to perpetuate themselves in power is evident in their use of deceit, misrepresentation, and polarizing tactics.

“The NPP’s adoption of divisive strategies involving religion and tribal politics reflects a sense of desperation. Their reliance on deception and distortion suggests a belief that these tactics are the only means to cling to power,” he said.

According to him, ho only emphasized the importance of the NDC as a unifying force, comparing it to a religion, and cited the NPP’s significant support from the Ashanti region, drawing parallels with US political loyalty.

“It is crucial to clarify that the quoted remarks accompanying the video are incorrect. During a retreat in January 2023, I emphasized to the people of the Volta region the significance of the NDC, urging them to perceive it not merely as a political party but as a unifying force, akin to a religion. To illustrate this, I referenced the substantial support the NPP receives from the Ashanti region drawing parallels with similar political loyalty observed in the United States for either the Democratic or Republican Party,” he clarified.

He cringes at how the media ran with the story without proper fact-checking.
