South African based Ghanaian musician, Gidoo has urged Ghanaian musicians to pay attention to the South African market as they do to the Nigerian market because it remains the continent’s most reliable gateway to the rest of the entertainment world.
Speaking in an exclusive interview from his base in South Africa with this reporter, Gidoo, known in real life as Gideon Opoku made this call to his colleagues in the Ghanaian music industry.
He noted with concern that despite little return from Ghanaian top artist’s over reliance on the Nigerian market, industry player have failed to learn their lessons and come to terms with the need to rope in other countries that provide even better exposure.
“When Nigeria musicians want to make it internationally, they invest more in South Africa, they create a fan-base here because they know that in terms of entertainment, South Africa is the continent’s gateway to the rest of the world.”
“Unfortunately, when Ghanaian musicians want to make it internationally, they put all their eggs in the Nigerian basket and for the most part, come out short”.
“I don’t want to mention names but aside Sarkodie, check out the number of views of Ghanaian musicians when they feature Nigerian A list Nigerian artist”. A few have been successful but most have been underwhelming because once the song is in the name of the Ghanaian, most Nigerians won’t fall for it”.
He indicated that despite the size of the Nigerian market, musician in Nigeria make a lot commitment to succeed in South Africa because they know the potentials of that market and for the most part, the result has been amazing. In contracts, he said “Ghanaian over focus on Nigeria and end up making little impact globally.”
Gidoo who is out with his first single ‘Erima’ with Don Steve in feature says he is looking to make a breakthrough in the music industry after years of developing his crafts through performing as a lead singer for The Ghana Police Band, Agya Koo’s Tete Mmofra Band and currently South African Based Sankofa Band. Gidoo believes that he has gone through the mill and developed his craft enough to compete with the industry’s finest.
His new single, Erima is an afro beat tune that has Gidoo professing his undying love for his sweetheart. He gives her all the assurance of his enduring love for and commitment to offer her is very best. .
