Professor John Gatsi, a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast has called on Ghanaian parents to make reading a priority for their kids.
He said the benefits kids derive from reading a lot of books are enormous.
Speaking at the International literacy day at Ho in the Volta Region organized by Read Ghana Foundation, Prof John Gatsi said reading is the key to learning and [ads1]helps readers including children to be informed, productive and improve in life.
The academician also called on children to be curious when reading because reading can help unearth talents and opportunities.
“Parents, teachers, and leaders in society must provide textbooks, storybooks and other reading materials as gifts to children to encourage them”, he said.
International Literacy Day, celebrated annually on 8 September, is an opportunity for Governments, civil society and stakeholders to highlight improvements in world literacy rates, and reflect on the world’s remaining literacy challenges.
Dr. Stephen Torkpo and Mrs. Mariam J.A Adzroe, also speakers at the event, advised students to be focused on reading and not to be destructed by watching television excessively. They use their personal experiences to encourage parents, teachers, and society to make reading a habit.
Prof Gatsi advised children against the temptation of possession of books without reading them because a reading child is likely to be productive, useful and well informed.
