Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to appoint only 50 ministers if he is elected president. That would be contrary to the oversized team he is part of under President Akufo-Addo.
Dr Bawumia said regulating government expenditure is a necessity for the country. He estimated that working with 50 ministers would help him achieve his target of 3 to 5% reduction in government expenditure.
“My view, as I have stated, is that let us bring down government expenditure between 3 to 5 per cent. I believe that I can run a government with 50 ministers rather than what we are doing today,” Bawumia told the gathering of CEOs.
Also, Dr Bawumia denied claims that the current government is overspending. He noted that measures have been implemented to ensure wasteful expenditures are not incurred.
“The networking of the hospitals; you know, Ghana.gov—all of these things have been spearheaded. So the government is not uploading and spending upfront. And I want us to apply this model,” he stated.
