A statesman and founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has stated that the recent conduct of the Electoral Commission poses a significant threat to Ghana’s democracy.
Addressing the audience at the Crusaders Against Corruption event on Monday, September 2, 2024, in Accra, the former ambassador expressed his concern that the EC has engaged in dubious practices that could escalate during the 2024 elections.
Speaking at the event, which was under the theme “The Scarface of Corruption in Ghana: How Corruption Brings About Poverty today” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe said, “I am saying at the moment, the greatest threat to have democracy is the Electoral Commission, that is the greatest threat to our democracy, and if we are not careful, they will lead this country into destruction, mark my words.”
“I’ve seen coup d’etat in this country, I have been part of coup d’etat in this country, and I know what I’m talking about. I spent almost five years of my life in prison,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe added.
He further expressed displeasure about how the EC allegedly transferred voters’ names to other areas without their knowledge, saying “How on earth can transfers be made from one particular constituency to another without the consent of others? These are facts.”
