Officers of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), have been accused of working contrary to the mandates of the crime-fighting organization.
According to social activist and commentator, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, some staff of EOCO engage in extortion activities to let go of persons reported to the organization for alleged finance-related crimes. He made the accusations based on information he claimed to be privy to.
The social activist, known for speaking against the ills of society, also named fraudsters or scammers, whom he described as “easy prey”, as one of the groups of individuals easily extorted by officers of the Economic and Organized Crime Office.
“Many of their [EOCO] officers have personally told me about the extortion they run there. I know of clients who have been reported to EOCO and who are extorted and the matter killed.
“Sakawa boys are in fact the favourite targets of our law enforcement, police and EOCO. They know that those are easy prey,” Mr. Vormawor wrote in a social media post sighted by Awakenewsroom.
He further revealed that some officers confided in him that they realized Ghana’s democracy was at stake when they started working for the organization. According to him, the officers said they lost faith in the system due to some fishy actions or deeds by the organization.
“I know EOCO officers who have told me that they lost faith in this country when they started working there. That’s when they knew that this democracy is doomed,” he added.
