National Security operatives in the Western Region have uncovered stacks of equipment belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at two separate locations in Kansaworado, a suburb of Sekondi-Takoradi.
This discovery follows ongoing efforts to trace over 1,300 containers reportedly missing from the Tema Port.
At one of the sites, an uncompleted building, the team found approximately seven drums containing fiber and aluminum cables stored on the compound. Alongside these, about 100 boxes of single-phase meter enclosures, packs of electrical switches, and other tools were also retrieved.
Initial investigations revealed that MBH Power had released these materials to Hegmic Co. Ltd. for electrification projects under the ECG’s Loss Reduction Program (LRP).
Evans Lartey, a supervisor with MBH Power, stated during interrogation that the equipment had proper documentation.
When asked about oversight, Lartey explained, “We have the District Technical Officers, the District Managers and the Regional Manager of the ECG being aware of this.”
A second location, an undeveloped plot a short distance from a private residence, held 41 full drums of aluminum cables and five used cables along with bundles of angle iron bars dumped in the bush. The identity of the owner of the land or those responsible for storing the cables there has not yet been determined.
Hashem Tanko Nuhu from National Security stated that their team had been instructed to confiscate the items for further examination.
“Our Regional National Security Coordinator will call our head office in Accra for further instructions. We will call ECG to the table. As at now, nobody has owned up to this. We’ve spoken to some residents here, but they seem not to know actual owners of the items. We are yet to even establish whoever owns this parcel of land,” he noted.
Regarding MBH Power’s involvement, Mr. Nuhu expressed dissatisfaction with the explanations provided by the supervisor, saying, “The problem we have is how those items got to a private residence.”
Meanwhile, a reliable source within ECG confirmed that the organization has a contractual arrangement with MBH Power under the Loss Reduction Program. However, the source did not confirm whether storing electrical supplies at private locations aligns with operational procedures. This development raises further questions as investigations continue.
