Speaking at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, October 15, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, declared that EC has never made anybody president but rather they declare the will of the people.
The chair person of the EC revealed that false claims from politicians to the public can damages the credibility of the electoral process and the peace of the nation.
She argued that the Electoral Commission does not have the power to make a particular candidate president but only to declare the results of elections after votes are cast by Ghanaians.
“The EC can never make anybody president and I think that we all know this around this table. Therefore, we should not peddle misinformation, fake news and disinformation and give innocent citizens who do not know the process that the electoral commission can make somebody a president.
“I would like to state on this occasion and quote from Dr Hassan Ayariga that the EC can never make anybody a president. What the EC does is declare who the voters choose as their president.
“So, it is the Ghanaian voter, who votes a president into being, it is not the EC that makes a president. We only declare the voters’ choice,” she said.
