UTAG has backed any actions by its members at the University of Winneba to resist any forms of intimidation against them by the Vice Chancellor.

UTAG insists its members should stand firm and be resolute without any fear of being victimized for doing no wrong as it is within their rights to do so.

News broke this week that Vice Chancellor of UEW, Reverend Professor Afful-Broni is reported to have dismissed some lecturers for allegedly challenging him and questioning his management style and policies in running the institution.

UTAG back the demonstration but cautioned the students not to go beyond the acceptable limits of expressing their grievances.

The Association also called on the governing Council to step up their game and intervene in the matter before it blows out of proportion.

On Tuesday some students on campus organised a demonstration to express their displeasure at the actions of the VC suggesting that it is having adverse effects on smooth academic operations.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, National UTAG President, Dr. Eric Opoku Mensah advised the UTAG members on campus stating, “UTAG identifies with our dear students’ protests but we urge our dear students to continue peacefully to cross home their demands. UTAG calls on UEW Governing Council to be up and doing as a responsible council and make sure that calm is restored on campus. We call on our cherished members on UEW campuses to stand up for their legitimate rights and should not allow themselves to be intimidated for posterity will judge us by our actions.”

To this end, the University Teachers’ Association of Ghana is calling for the immediate resignation of the Vice-Chancellor.

They are convinced his policies and actions and inactions have brought about the chaos witnessed on campus and the recent demonstrations.

This they assert is not in consonance with the directive by the President that peace be restored and all parties amicably settle their differences for smooth continuation of academic work.

UTAG observed “That the victimization and polarization on UEW campus is at variance with the President that the VC should reconcile all factions regarding the impasse which existed before his investiture, as at now over 30 people have been sacked, suspended or demoted arbitrarily.

They requested that “having failed his assigned task, It is the considered position that Prof Afful-Broni should resign honourably to save UEW from further chaos. UTAG is demanding an unconditional reinstatement of all staff who have been dismissed, demoted or suspended.”
