Legal tensions are escalating as former Attorney General Godfred Dame challenges President John Mahama’s ongoing consultations for the appointment of a new Chief Justice. Dame has filed an application seeking to halt the process until the Supreme Court issues a ruling on a related matter.
Dr. Dominic Ayine, who represents the President, has firmly defended the consultations, stating that they are constitutionally mandated and cannot be paused.
“There’s no order stopping the President,” Ayine remarked, emphasizing that the consultation process is part of the President’s constitutional duties. He further stressed that the law clearly protects the performance of such public obligations.
Despite Dame’s legal challenge, Ayine maintained that the President is well within his rights to continue with the consultations. “The President’s actions cannot be enjoined or delayed,” he stated, addressing concerns raised by the former Attorney General.
The case, which has drawn significant attention, has been adjourned by the Supreme Court to May 6 due to the absence of a panel member. Ayine confirmed that the legal process will proceed, with the court yet to make any orders that could affect the ongoing consultation.
