Residents of Ayerumu, a farming community in the Krachi East Municipal are still in a state of shock after Sunday’s rainfall which caused havoc in the community. 48 hours after the rainstorm, the ice cubes still remained unmelted.
[ads1]Hundreds of houses including school buildings and CHPS compound had their roofs ripped-off with others completely destroyed. Hundreds of indigenes were rendered homeless whiles some were severely injured in Ayerumu and Pai Katanga, communities within the Krachi East Municipality of Volta Region.
The severe rainstorm which saw some dangerous ice cubes falling from the sky last Sunday lasted for about 25 minutes, leading to the death of a nine-year-old girl named Abena Maanu while her mother also sustained severe injuries when their entire building collapsed on them at Pai Katanga. According to the family, the deceased had since been deposited at Worawora Government Hospital morgue while making the necessary arrangements for her burial on Thursday 8 March, 2018.
Speaking to some residents in the community, they revealed that a lot of animals and livestock were found dead after the rainstorm. Land poles, electrical poles and high tension cables were also affected by the Storm.
The Member of Parliament for Krachi, Michael Yaw Gyato who is also the Deputy Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, and the Municipal Chief Executive, MCE, Patrick Charty Jilima together with their entourage paid a visit to the affected Victims. The MP sympathised with the affected people promising the government’s readiness to salvage the situation.
He advised the chiefs and elders in the communities to make sure the unnecessary wood logging in the area comes to an end as they also adopt strategies of tree planting within their surroundings.
Mr. Gyato urged the Assembly as matter of urgency provide roofing sheets and other building materials for renovation of the affected school and CHPS compound and other individual homes.
