Inhabitants of communities along the Volta Lake in the Afram Plains North say they are left with no option than to protect their only source of livelihood from being destroyed by the Game and Wildlife officials before they die of hunger.
This has become necessary after Game and Wildlife officials numbering about 27 from the Atebubu District in the Brong Ahafo Region under the leadership of one Atta Kusi had stormed the communities, shot and [ads1]killed their cattle in a bid to drive them from the area.
The incident came after the Game and Wildlife officials went to destroy thousands of acres of Yam farms in other communities leaving the affected people hopeless some of whom are going hungry.
The headman of Mepekorpe, an affected community, Mark Kobla Akaho speaking to the media, said a good number of them and their families live on livestock due to the decline in fish catch.
Mr Akaho noted that as Ghanaians, it is important that they keep their animals around where they live, saying they have over the years kept cattle on the grassland area since they cannot thrive in the forest area and therefore the officials claim that they are rearing in the forest is not true.
Mr Akaho, however, called on the government to intervene and call the Games and wildlife officials to order for them to also live and go about their occupations as other Ghanaians.
According to Yaaye Alezuma from another affected community, the officials told them that they will ensure that they sack them all from the area before NDC returns to power, adding that even the president is aware of their activities.
Jacob Gadoglo who was born in the area narrating his ordeal that, the G&W officials shot his manhood sometimes ago for which he was hospitalized for months.
Mr Gadoglo noted that they have nowhere to go and therefore called for the government’s intervention.
Not to remind relatives sorrow, the activities of the G&W officials led to the 2006 Volta Lake disaster which claimed over 130 lives leaving several children orphans.
It was a similar incident which masterminded drowning of five persons when some desperate residents were transporting their belongings on the Volta Lake last month.
The investigation establishes that the official’s actions are fueled by their inability get money, animals and foodstuffs from the people like before.
It was also discovered that these officials are driving out the thousands population in order to have access to lumbering since the people serve as a hindrance to their modus operandi.
