The national senior cricket team has arrived in South Africa’s capital Johannesburg for further high performance training ahead of their International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cricket League (WCL) Division 5 qualifiers.
The team, which won Africa Division One in March this year in Benoni, would seek to qualify to the World Division Four stage when the tournament starts on Sunday, September 3, 2017.
To achieve a qualification to Division Four, the technical handlers of the team saw it necessary to go through high performance training in Johannesburg for a week before the tournament.
The team, therefore, left the shores of the country last Wednesday and began training yesterday. They are expected to end training on Friday, September 1, 2017.
In Ghana, the team had a non-residential high performance training from July and began residential camping on August 19.
The team that won the Africa Division One has seen a plus and minus. Peter Ananya remains the captain, with Isaac Kofi Otuafo Aboagye as deputy.
The rest of the players include James Kwaku Vifah, Simon Ateak, Moses K. Anafie, Frank Baaleri, Godfred Bakiweyem, Kofi Bagabena, Vincent Ateak, Julius Horlali Mensah, David Nii Ashong Ankrah, Samson Kwasi Awe Awiah, and the new player, Obed Harvey Agbomadzi, completing the 14-man squad.
The team will be managed by Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah Asare, who is the Vice-President of the Ghana Cricket Association and coached by Kodam Kofi Anafie.
Ghana is in Group B and will begin their campaign against Germany on Sunday, September 3. They will continue with Vanuatu on Monday and complete with Jersey on Tuesday for the group stages.
The tournament, which will end on Saturday, September 9, also has a Group A, which is made up of Guernsey, Cayman Islands, Italy and Qatar.
Much will be expected from the team, especially as their U-19 team failed to make it to New Zealand 2018 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup after placing third in the Africa U-19 division 1 qualification stage in July in Kenya.
