Sammy Awuku says the government and New Patriotic Party (NPP) would accord John Mahama the needed reverence if he embarks on a decent campaign.
The former President is the 2020 flag-bearer elect of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and this is the third time he is leading his party into the general elections, after 2012 and 2016.
John Mahama, during his tour of the regions ahead of the NDC’s presidential primaries last Saturday, cut the NPP government to sizes, criticising President Akufo-Addo’s government for a poor show since 2017.
One of his criticisms irked President Akufo-Addo to react that he would not respond to presidential aspirants.
As if that was not enough, John Mahama warned the NPP that the NDC would match them boot for boot if it tried to intimidate the NDC with its militia vigilantes in the 2020 general elections.
Considering his criticisms, which the NPP find insulting and unhealthy as the country marches to the 2020 general elections, Sammy Awuku cautioned would be met with an equal dose should Mr Mahama fail to tame his speeches.
“If he comes clean, we will accord him the respect as a former President,” he said on a condition.
Touching on the victory of John Mahama in the NDC’s presidential primaries, Samuel Awuku said it was evident that Mr Mahama would beat his other six contenders “because he was the most experienced and stood tall among them all.”
Having this at the back of their minds, the NPP started strategising to tackle John Mahama immediately he announced his come back, Mr Awuku said.
“We are ready for him because we have his antidotes. We will beat him again in 2020,” Sammy Awuku said.
