The Ghana Chess Association (GCA) in partnership with Kasparov Chess Foundation Africa would organise the 7th edition of the Ghana Chess President’s Cup on Friday, September 15, 2017.
The competition is expected to end on Sunday, September 17, 2017 and would be held at the Media Centre of the Accra Sports Stadium.
[ads1]According to Secretary General of the Ghana Chess Association, Christine Ashley, a total prize of US$2,000 would be at stake for winners in the various categories.
She said first prize winner would take home US$750 while second placed winner takes home US$500 and third place also goes home with US$300 while fourth and fifth placed players also go home with US$200 and US$100 respectively.
She added that ladies in the tournament would be rewarded with US$100 while the best junior player also receives US$50.
She also mentioned that the competition is opened to all players. Entry fee for foreigners and non-paid GCA members has been pegged at GH₵100.
The Secretary General also said fully paid GCA members were required to pay an entry fee of GH₵70 while junior players (U-18) would pay GH₵50 to participate.
The tournament was initiated by the GCA President Group Captain George Arko-Dadzie and is currently rated internationally by the World Chess Federation (WCF).
Group Captain Arko-Dadzie noted that his vision is to establish an internationally recognized and attractive chess tournament in Ghana which according to him is gradually taking shape.
He also acknowledged the support from Kasparov Chess Foundation Africa who have been supporting the competition for some time now.
He made a plea to the corporate institutions to lend a hand in developing the game of chess in Ghana.
