When Russian oligarch Roman Abramovic, after almost two decades as the Bank roller of Chelsea, was forced to sell the London-based club by the English government a couple of years ago, Chairman Wontumi boldly declared his interest. This is the vision the Ashanti Region chairman for the National Patriotic Party (NPP) had about football.

The businessman cum politician is a rich man who always makes it clear that he has what it takes to lead any huge institution, and the latest one is his announcement about his interest in becoming the chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is a staunch Asante Kotoko fan and would welcome the opportunity to lead the club when it arises.

On Wontumi TV’s sports show, when Chairman Wontumi, was asked about his thoughts on Ghanaian football currently by Fancy Di Maria, the chairman expressed his desire to become a leader of Asante Kotoko.

“Because of the NPP, sometimes I don’t serve as I’m supposed to, but I still contribute in other ways. But I know that one day, I will be Kotoko chairman,” he stated.

He added, “And when I become chairman, I will use money and aggression to make the team as great as it was under Herbert.”

“We all saw what Herbert did, so I will apply all of that with a bit of pride. The level I will take Kotoko to, everyone will see. But just as Jesus told Mary, ‘It’s not my time yet,’ I will also say that it’s not my turn yet,” he stressed.

Chairman Wontumi eulogized the legendary Herbert Mensah, who, in the early 2000s, transformed Asante Kotoko with his wit and sumptuous strategies, revealing that he would follow in his footsteps.

Asante Kotoko has been in crisis in the last decade after failing to make any impact on the African continent. Once the Club of the Century by IFFHS, the Porcupine Warriors must return to their best and Chairman Wontumi could be the man to lead the renaissance.
