Justin Koduah, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has directed all party members and communicators to refrain from commenting on the continuing tensions between the NPP and the Manhyia Palace.
At a press conference in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, the NPP General Secretary, Justin Koduah called for a ceasefire and assured that the NPP leadership is addressing the matter.
His statement comes after Manhyia Palace summoned Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, for allegedly undermining the authority of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene
“I have built my own kingdom, I have my own police and military, and I will speak my mind to Otumfuo if I disagree on an issue with him,” Chairman Wontumi allegedly said. According to reports, this statement was made by Chairman Wontum during a meeting of the NPP parliamentary primaries vetting committee in the Ashanti Regional.
In response to the claimed threat to the Otumfuo’s authority, the Asanteman Traditional Council reportedly wrote to the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua. The letter requests that Chairman Wontumi appear at the Manhyia Palace to explain his views and address the perceived disrespect towards Otumfuo.
This development has raised worries in both political and traditional circles, as stakeholders wait for Chairman Wontumi’s response and the outcome of his meeting with the Asantehene in the Manhyia Palace.
