Some youth from Asawase Zongo have stormed the Kumasi Central Mosque in the Ashanti Region, burning tyres in apparent protest to recent shootings of seven residents by the police.

[ads1]The protestors who have so far blocked some major roads and are currently burning tyres are demanding justice for the death of their colleagues, refuting claims that they are armed robbers.

The Ashanti Regional Police SWAT Unit on Tuesday gunned down 7 suspected armed robbers at Poano near anhwiakwanta on the Kumasi-Obuasi road.

The suspected robbers were believed to be in the gang that killed the late Lance Corporal Daniel Tieku of the SWAT Unit, last week.

The police reported that the suspects were shot in an attempt to open fire on the police during their arrest.

Families of the deceased have so far refuted claims that those involved were armed robbers.

The Sariki Zongo of Kumasi Ashanti Region, Chief Ahmed Rufai Alao in a statement also indicated that the suspected armed robbers were known faces in the community and had no record as such.

He appealed to the people in the community to remain calm as they work with the police to resolve the matter.

The Member of Parliament Asawase Constituency, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak has called for an independent investigation into the killing of seven young men.
