The President’s nominee for Krowor Municipal Assembly, Mr. Joshua Bortey has been confirmed by 9 members the assembly amid controversy and under heavy armed police projections at the GNAT Hall, in Nungua after three assembly members perceived to be members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) were arrested last night.
Awake News can confirm that the confirmation was done at the GNAT Hall in the absence of the Presiding Member and the District Coordinating Director.
It has also been alleged that the Presiding Member who per the local government Act is to send an invitation letter to members of the Assembly for the election has not done that.
Background:
Last night Awake News reported that the Krowor Municipal Assembly was boiling as the MP for the area, Hon. Elizabeth Afoley Quaye has ordered for the arrest of three (3) assembly members perceived to be members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The MP who is also the Minister of Fisheries & Aquaculture is said to have ordered the arrest of Hon. Alfred Ahisah Laryea, Hon. Lawrence Borquaye and Hon. Robert Odiko ahead of tomorrow’s confirmation of the Municipal Chief Executive.
The nominee for the MCE position Mr. Joshua Bortey, a close friend of the MP, has been rejected on two occasions, a situation he feels was orchestrated by the same three assembly members hence their arrest to prevent them from participating in the election and or influencing other members against his confirmation.
The three are currently being held at the Nungua Police station in Accra.
Presiding Members and District Coordinating Director under duress to hold an emergency assembly meeting:
The Presiding Member, Hon Romeo Sarfo and Mr. Nortey, the Coordinating Director of Krowor Municipal Assembly are under duress from Hon. Elizabeth Afoley Quaye (MP for Krowor) to organize an emergency General Assembly meeting tomorrow (January 9, 2019) for the confirmation of the two times rejected MCE nominee, Mr.Joshua Bortey following an arrest of the three Assembly members who allegedly refused an offer from the nominee.
The MP, smelling the third time rejection of her friend sanctioned the arrest to keep the three away from proceedings tomorrow since confirmation is done by 2/3 majority of members present and voting so their absence to the Mp will facilitate her male friend been confirmed.
NDC supporters stormed the Police Station:
The three, after spending the night at the Nungua Police station in Accra were sent to the Krowor District Court this morning and then to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command.
They were later sent to the Accra Circuit Court near the KwamCourt which is not far from the Kwame Nkrumah museum. It is not year clear the charged press against the trio but it is been said that their arrest is base on “order from above”.
Some leading members and lawyers (Edudzi Tameklo, Francis Sosu) for the opposition NDC have also been sported in the court premises.
Confirmation of the MCE:
Whiles, the public attention was on the three arrested last night, the MCE’s confirmation kicked off at the GNAT Hall in Nungua under heavy police protection but without the presence of the Presiding Member, Hon Romeo Sarfo and Mr. Nortey, the Coordinating Director of Krowor Municipal Assembly.
The election of the MCE was done by only 9 out of the 18 members of the assembly. The 9, 6 are the President’s nominee and 3 elected members raise serious issues as to why over half of the members that were to vote has been kicked out.
