Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, will begin training for the Unity Cup on Sunday, May 25, ahead of their highly anticipated semifinal clash with Nigeria.
Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Dr. Randy Abbey, confirmed the preparations during an interview with 3Sports. The match against Nigeria will take place on May 28 at the Gtech Community Stadium in London.
The winner will face either Trinidad and Tobago or Jamaica in the final on May 31, also at Gtech.
Despite league action still ongoing in Europe, the team is expected to hold three training sessions before the match against Nigeria. Dr. Abbey acknowledged challenges in assembling the full squad.
“There are quite a number of players who are injured,” he said. “Others are tied to club duties, especially those involved in European qualification games. This period falls outside the official FIFA international window, so their clubs aren’t obligated to release them.”
Injuries and scheduling conflicts mean that Ghana may field a somewhat limited squad for the Unity Cup. However, the tournament will still provide crucial preparation ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Black Stars will return to qualification action in September, facing Chad and Mali, followed by matches against Comoros and the Central African Republic in October.
Fans are hopeful the team will build momentum and foster unity ahead of those competitive fixtures.
