Renowned Political Analyst Mr. Kweku Sarpong has criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s proposal to renew driver’s licenses every ten years, calling it “wholly unnecessary”. According to him, the Vice President’s proposal does not address the real concerns of drivers in Ghana.

Mr. Sarpong argued that driver’s licenses are regulated documents intended to monitor drivers’ activities, particularly their vision, which is crucial for safe driving.

He expressed the opinion that regular eye tests are one of the most effective ways to ensure road safety. Mr. Sarpong further highlighted that drivers’ primary concern is the high fuel prices, which have increased by 50% in the past year.

He also called on the government to reduce fuel prices and prioritize improving road infrastructure to prevent accidents and ensure a safer driving environment.

With over 2,000 deaths recorded annually due to road accidents in Ghana, Mr. Sarpong emphasized the need for the government to address this issue before introducing measures that may further burden drivers.

Mr. Sarpong added that Dr. Bawumia’s proposal is misguided and fails to address the root causes of road accidents in Ghana.

He also opined that the government’s “Year of Roads” initiative, which was intended to address the country’s road infrastructure challenges, has been shambolic.
