In a candid and introspective address, former Vice President and NPP presidential candidate in the 2024 electios, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has shed light on the party’s disheartening defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at the inauguration of the party’s nationwide “Thank You Tour” at the NPP headquarters in Accra, Bawumia attributed the party’s loss to internal voter apathy rather than external opposition strength or religious bias.
With unflinching honesty, Bawumia revealed that despite the party’s tireless efforts, a staggering 2.1 million votes were lost due to internal apathy.
“The fact is, we worked very hard. But notwithstanding our efforts, we still suffered a heavy defeat. When you look at what happened, it was internal. Many of our supporters did not come out to vote,” he stated.
Bawumia also forcefully debunked claims that religious bias against his candidacy contributed to the party’s loss.
“Some people said they didn’t vote for us because our presidential candidate was Muslim. But this doesn’t make sense. This is not the Ghana I know,” he asserted.
He pointed out that despite being the only Muslim among ten presidential aspirants during the NPP primaries, the party chose him, underscoring the absence of religious bias in the voting process.
Infact with a tone of humility and reconciliation, Bawumia expressed gratitude to the party’s national officers and staff, acknowledging their behind-the-scenes work.
He also pledged continued support for some staff members and promised to do more. Looking ahead, the former Vice President emphasized unity and internal restructuring as keys to the party’s future success.
“So many people have spoken about why we lost, but without data. Now we have it. And we must act on it,” he stressed.
Bawumia’s remarks mark a crucial turning point in the party’s introspection and rebuilding process.
