Bawku: 1 dead in a fearful gunshot over facebook comment

Residents in some part of Bawku in the Upper East Region was left in a state of fear as the youth of two ethnic groups, Manprusi and Moshie of Bawku area engaged each other in a fearful gunshot exchange.

According to reports, the gunshot exchange which left one person dead [ads1]is a result of a Facebook comment by one man who raised a concern about an alleged corrupt act of one ambulance driver in the community.

One resident who spoke to Awake News said on Wednesday 20th June, 2018 dawn around 12:30am, series of gunshot were heard around Kariama, a suburb of Bawku amongst the youth of the Manprusis and the Moshies which resulted in the death of one person (name not known).

According to him, one Moshie youth took to his Facebook page to accused a driver of an ambulance which was bought by a philanthropist for the Muslim community in the area of engaging in the alleged corrupt activities.

In the Facebook comment, the driver of this said ambulance has been accused by the moshie young man of collecting some money from persons who intend using the ambulance to pick a dead body aside the actual fees charged by the ambulance service which he sees as not right.

Sources said that the Manprusis didn’t like the action of the ‘facebooker’ and further attacked the young man’s family house by burning it down yesterday June 19, 2018 around 11:50pm. In the process of burning down the house, the Moshies also launched a reprisals attack in self-defense.

Speaking to Awake News, Cheif Supt. Yao Tettegah, the Divisional Police Commander for Bawku confirmed the incident but said no arrest has yet been made as the security force focusing on stabilizing the tension in the area.
