One of the conveyors of the pressure group, FixTheCountry, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has threatened to organize the biggest demonstration in the country regardless of the outcome of his treason trial which is set to begin in May.
According to the social and political activist, he would personally plan and execute the demonstration if the trial concludes in his favour. He also indicated that should he be convicted and jailed, his fellow FixTheCountry conveyors will organize the protest against the Akufo-Addo-led government.
“My trial for Treason starts in May. If I get acquitted, we will organize the biggest demonstration this Government has ever seen.
“And if I get convicted, my friends at FixTheCountry will organize the biggest demonstration they have ever organized,” Mr. Vormawor wrote in a Facebook post sighted by Awakenewsroom.
In February 2022, Oliver Barker-Vormawor was arrested and detained for days, for series of social media posts he made. These posts, according to the government, posed security threats to the country. The posts were related to the passing of the then controversial E-Levy bill.
“If this E-Levy passes after this cake bullshit, I will do the coup myself. Useless Army!” he wrote in one of the posts.
In another post, the Harvard Law School graduate wrote: “Okay, let’s try again. If this E-Levy still passes after this cake bullshit, then may God….Help us to resist oppressor’s rule, With all our will and might for evermore. (2x)
“Useless Army. Anaa, the value is the same?”
The Ghana Police Service, in a statement signed by the then Director-General of Public Affairs, DCOP Kwesi Ofori, said Vormawor’s “post contained a clear statement of intent with a possible will to execute a coup in his declaration of intent to subvert the constitution of the Republic of Ghana.”
The Police the urged Ghanaians “to avoid making pronouncements that may lead to a breach of the peace of the country as any such acts contravene the laws of the country.”
Mr. Oliver Barker-Vormawor faces the death penalty if convicted for the treason charge leveled against him.
