Barcelona are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey on a free transfer this summer. The Ghana international is out of contract at the end of June, and no agreement has yet been reached with the Gunners over a renewal.

The Spanish giants see Partey as a cost-effective addition to their midfield and have already contacted his representatives. Manager Hansi Flick is said to be a long-time admirer of the 31-year-old, who spent five years at Atlético Madrid before his £45 million move to Arsenal in 2020.

Although injuries have hampered Partey’s time in North London, he remains a key presence when fit. He featured in 35 Premier League games last season, helping Arsenal challenge Liverpool for the title.

Arsenal Yet to Offer New Deal

Mikel Arteta has publicly stated his desire to keep Partey, but negotiations have stalled. Partey is reportedly unwilling to take a significant pay cut, knowing this could be his final major contract.

Sources close to the player say he prefers to stay in London, where his family is settled and where he recently welcomed a new child. However, with no agreement in sight, other clubs, including former side Atlético Madrid and some Saudi Pro League teams, are monitoring the situation.

Barcelona’s Financial Strategy

Barcelona continues to grapple with Financial Fair Play restrictions and are seeking low-cost solutions to bolster their squad. A free transfer for Partey would be a strategic move, bringing experience and strength to their midfield without a large transfer fee.

One insider told The Sun:

“Thomas respects Arsenal and enjoys living in London, but he knows his worth. He wants a deal that reflects his value at the club.”

Arsenal Eyeing Zubimendi as Replacement

Should Partey leave, Arsenal are prepared to activate the £51 million release clause of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. Reports from Spain suggest the deal is close to being finalized, with personal terms already agreed.

Zubimendi turned down a move to Liverpool last summer but has now been convinced by Arteta’s project at Arsenal. The Gunners are reportedly planning to spend up to £200 million this transfer window to build a title-winning squad.
