Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly condemned efforts by certain individuals to exploit the ongoing conflict in Bawku for political gain.
In a statement issued on Friday, April 11, 2025, Mr. Ayariga confirmed that his residence in the area was set ablaze by unknown assailants.
While expressing concern over the incident, he emphasized that such acts of violence and the accompanying smear campaigns will not derail his commitment to peace and stability in the region.
“Kindly disregard lies being told about me by political detractors and people seeking shamelessly to take advantage of the current situation in Bawku and Kusaug to settle personal electoral political scores. The smear campaign on social media will not distract me. In the end, we will be vindicated,” he stated.
Mr. Ayariga noted that while some people have taken to social media to spread misinformation and score cheap political points, he remains focused on addressing the root causes of the conflict.
He reaffirmed his dedication to the peace process and urged the youth in the area to remain calm and cooperative, even if they feel the process is progressing slowly.
“As frustrating as it may be, peacebuilding takes time. I encourage the youth to stay committed and support efforts aimed at restoring harmony to our communities,” he added.
The Bawku conflict has been a longstanding issue, with intermittent clashes affecting lives and livelihoods. Mr. Ayariga’s latest remarks signal his continued resolve to seek lasting peace despite personal losses and political attacks.
