Some athletes who patronise the D.G Hathramani Sports Hall at the Accra Sports Stadium are complaining about the closure of the facility after its recent renovation.

The Sports Hall which was used as the host venue for the maiden Ghana Open Taekwondo Championship was closed down after the facility saw a major refurbishment.

The Hall serves over five sporting disciplines and its closure means these disciplines cannot train until it is reopened.

Speaking in an interview with Awake Sports, Technical Director and Head Coach of the National Amateur Boxing Team, Ofori Asare described the turn of events as surprising.

According to him, he now trains his boxers on the streets of the Accra Sports Stadium a situation he described as an affront to the development of sports in the country.

He said this would hinder the training of athletes towards the upcoming National Sports Festival which would begin on August 31.

However, the Public Affairs Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Frederica Mensa Davies, explained that despite a successful hosting of the Taekwondo Open Championship, the facility still needed further renovation.

She said not all renovation works were done on the hall and therefore it needed some additional works hence the shutdown.

She also failed to state when it would be reopened but stressed that the hall would be opened to the public when renovations were completed.

Disciplines like, boxing, taekwondo, table tennis, badminton, judo, karete-do just to mention a few would now have to look elsewhere to train until further notice.
